A lot has been written on the question asked in interview and how to answer or appear for the interview. Though it’s very much unpredictable the question asked by Interviewer, there are few questions which are being asked in almost 8 out of 10 interviews. I have conducted many interviews and selected / appointed many in my career of 36+ years. Let me also accept of asking few common questions. Sometimes, was wondering whether I am asking right question or not. Even thought, why asking this question?

Compiling such few questions with bit brainstorming about the answer; as per my understanding… Hence, will keep revising, editing, updating this document time to time. Let’s start!!!

Why you want to change the present job?

Your reason for job change could be anything. In most of the cases, the reason is for money, monetary benefits. In such case also, it should not be accepted as sole or only reason. One has to think in advance and may club this reason with other reasons thereby making it evident that money is not the only reason. But remember whatever may be the reason, never, never ever criticize your present company / employer. Anyway, you have decided to move on. Therefore, no point in having negativity in answer / interview. Better, one should remain pleasant, with full of positive energy and cheerfulness.

This question is being asked in the interview to ascertain that candidate is not changing due to poor performance / have been asked to go / complicated working relationships or you hate the job / boss.

There is nothing wrong in changing the job, for that matter, even Interviewer might have changed the job in past. Question is not asked to trap you, but Interviewer wants to know your motivations and reasons. Hence, be positive, confident (about decision of changing the job), cheerful and take the question head on with a smile. Probable reasons can be offered are_____

  • For new challenges and personal growth. A proper homework needs to be done before giving this answer about the challenges expected from the new position and how these are different from the present one. Also, some explanation / clarification be given how this will work for one’s personal growth (can have reference to financial growth also).
  • Long-term prospects of current industry. Be cautious, answer should not look like complaining. But to be presented with facts without emotion as a neutral party.
  • Exploring a new career which is in line with your dream job / support towards achieving your aim, dreams.
  • Explaining that not only this new job matches your skill, experience, personality but in fact helps in a great way to enhance it further.
  • Personal interest, liking to this industry type, functional area, job location etc. While citing this as a reason, one need to control his emotions, over enthusiasm. So, it’s better this reason should be well written in advance and prepared thoroughly before interview.
  • For contributing towards a social or community responsibility.
  • Following the path, footsteps of your friend, colleagues, seniors who has made such job change and had a great result, achievement.

It’s better to prepare in advance, before interview for this question. If not prepared, one may fumble answering this question and will not have immediate convincing answer. If tried to avoid the question, will give a very negative feeling to Interviewer and he will not be comfortable in offering you the said position. Hence, good preparation ahead of interview is must. Answering directly with confidence, smile and impressing upon your strong reasons for Career Change is the key to success.
